Surface stations and Climate Monitoring Networks

Roger Pielke Sr. has posted an interesting article that takes what Anthony Watts says in a FoxNews article and adds an important point about the reliability of the thermometer record.

As background – the surface station network used to measure temperature trends has come in for some richly justified criticisms along the lines of: missing data, station changes and movements, station positioning near warm things (eg: air conditioner outlets, BBQ pits, etc.,) operator error, and careful massaging of the available data.
