A Dose of Reality for Alternative Energy

Posted by greg2213 on May 5, 2013

And that dose of reality is the fossil fuel that needed to make it real. The rare earths that are required which just switch our dependencies from one country to the other. The large amount of diesel fuel that’s required to ship pieces from one place to another.

Checxk this our from AlbertaOilMagazine.com:

Consider this oddball energy scheme. A tree is cut down in British Columbia with a diesel-fueled chainsaw. The trunk is transported on a truck, also running on diesel, to a sawmill. An automated production line makes a load of woodchips for a 5,000-kilometer delivery by diesel train or truck to an East Coast port.

Then more fossil fuel-burning transportation machinery ships the chips across the Atlantic Ocean and Europe to a power plant which is mandated to produce 20 per cent renewable energy. These wood chips are officially considered carbon neutral and the energy they produce is called clean.

It’s being done because under current regulations it makes sense economically. But as a way to attain environmental goals that inspire policies like the 20 per cent renewable energy requirement, it is a disaster. Not only is the wood-chip scheme far from carbon neutral, it is not going to improve energy security and only deepens the dependence on the fossil fuels it is supposed to replace.

….

Of nine challenges that he describes, one of the biggest is the dependence of renewable energy technology on non-renewable natural resources such as the lithium used to produce car batteries or the rare earths used in LED lights, magnets on windmills and PV panels. Switching energy forms just means trading dependence on Middle Eastern oil for reliance on lithium from Bolivia or Chinese rare earths. China saw its opportunity and has curtailed exports of rare earths in order to force the alternative energy equipment industry to locate there.

Excellent article. Here’s the rest: How to exacerbate a fossil-fuel addiction

Warming Increases Tree Growth

Posted by greg2213 on May 28, 2011

An interesting study is posted on WUWT:

The paper summarizes the results of a 7-year study at Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts, in which a section of the forest (about one-quarter of an acre) was artificially warmed about 9oF above ambient, to simulate the amount of climate warming that might be observed by the end of the century without aggressive actions to control greenhouse gas emissions from fossil-fuel burning and deforestation.

The study confirmed, as others have, that a warmer climate causes more rapid decomposition of the organic matter in soil, leading to an increase in carbon dioxide being released to the atmosphere.

But the study also showed, for the first time in a field experiment, that warmer temperatures stimulate the gain of carbon stored in trees as woody tissue, partially offsetting the soil carbon loss to the atmosphere. The carbon gains in trees, the scientists found, is due to more nitrogen being made available to the trees with warmer soil.

The authors (or, at least, the writer(s) of the press release) seems to think that CO2 is the primary greenhouse gas in the atmosphere and that temps might increase by 9F by the end of the century.

The comments point out a few holes in the study, but it does seem to indicate that warming is a good thing, which makes perfect sense, since plant growth/range is limited by cold and not warmth.

A commenter adds more about CO2 and plant growth:

It is ironic that current research and the paleo record unequivocally supports the statement that the biosphere expands and is more efficient due to higher atmospheric CO2,as the so called green groups advocate carbon caps and carbon sequestration. The problem appears to be an inability to think independently and the green leaches such as those who profit from “wind farms” and “carbon trading” and “green consulting”.

Benefits due to Increasing CO2
The finding that increasing CO2 levels has caused a 50% increase in Aspen growth is not a surprise….

Gasoline Powered Alarm Clock

Posted by greg2213 on March 27, 2010

Well, our Goovernment has done it again. The gasoline powered alarm clock has been approved as an Energy star appliance. And people wonder why we don’t trust the Gov to nationalize health care and run it better than private companies.

From WattsUpWithThat (emphasis in the original:)

WASHINGTON — Does a “gasoline-powered alarm clock” qualify for the EnergyStar label, the government stamp of approval for an energy-saving product?

Like more than a dozen other bogus products submitted for approval since last June by Congressional auditors posing as companies, it easily secured the label, according to a Congressional report to be issued Friday. So did an “air purifier” that was essentially an electric space heater with a feather duster pasted on top, the Government Accountability Office said.
